Is a used CNC milling machine worth considering?

Sep 30, 2021

Generally, when people think about investing in a CNC milling machine, they consider buying a new one, but that is not always the best option. In certain circumstances, it can be more cost-effective to invest in a used CNC milling machine.

However, the fact that it can be a good investment does not mean it should be chosen without prior analysis. The reality is that CNC milling machines demand high performance standards because of the work they are designed for. You need to be very thorough when it comes to buying a used CNC milling machine in order to ensure good performance.

Furthermore, buying just any CNC milling machine is not enough. Even when buying a new one, all its features must be taken into account to determine the most suitable option, as not all CNC milling machines are the same.

Features to consider in used CNC milling machines

There are a number of features that should be analysed when deciding to buy a used CNC milling machine. These are:

Table length and width

The length and width of the table must match the parts to be machined. For small parts, a small table will work without any problem. Conversely, for large parts, a large table will be essential.

Rotation in both directions

Not all tables offer rotation in both directions. Although this feature is not essential for a CNC milling machine to work, if you want maximum versatility when milling, it is advisable to choose a used CNC milling machine with this feature.

Longitudinal and cross travel of the table

This feature works hand in hand with the size of the table, as the cutting tool must be able to reach the whole table. If the table is large but the maximum longitudinal and cross travel is small, it will not be possible to machine large parts.

To check this, simply use the cutting tool of the used CNC milling machine before buying it, making sure that it reaches every edge of the table.

Maximum load capacity

The maximum weight the table can bear will limit the type of parts that can be machined. It is important to make sure that the maximum load is not lower than the weight of the parts you plan to machine.

Other features

There are other features that do not limit the use of a used CNC milling machine so much but have a major influence on its efficiency. Specifically, the motor power and speed determine which materials the machine can work with and the speed at which they can be machined.

Types of used CNC milling machines

Not all used CNC milling machines are the same: they are classified according to how the spindle is arranged. This determines how the workpiece will move, so the type you choose will also depend on the operations you plan to carry out. The types are as follows:
  • Vertical CNC milling machines.
  • Universal CNC milling machines.
  • Horizontal CNC milling machines.

Considerations before buying a used CNC milling machine

The points above relate to what you should consider when buying a used CNC milling machine. However, there are other considerations that are important for an investment of this kind to be the right one. They are not related to a specific type of CNC milling machine but should be taken into account whatever type of milling machine you want to buy.

Avoid buying oversized machinery

A larger CNC milling machine also costs more. If it is going to be used to machine small parts, it would be a poor investment. The dimensions of the work should therefore be determined precisely so that you do not buy more machine than you need.

Consider the service life

When buying a used CNC milling machine, it is very important to find out why it is being sold, how long it has been in use and whether the seller offers any kind of warranty. If you only plan to use the machine for a limited time, these aspects may be less important.

However, if you intend to use the machine for a long time, you should assess whether its durability will be adequate for the planned period of use, as it is a mistake to assume that it will always run perfectly.
