What is a 600x480x100 cast-iron surface plate used for?
As a reference surface for marking out and checking parts with a surface gauge, dial indicator or squares, and as an assembly base for fixtures. The grid slots retain oil and dirt and make it easier to support parts and clamps.
What is the difference between a cast-iron and a granite surface plate?
Cast iron withstands knocks, clamping and assembly work, and can be hand-scraped; granite is more thermally stable, does not rust and is usually preferred in metrology rooms. For workshop use, cast iron is more versatile.
