Universal milling machine services

Feb 18, 2022

Universal milling machine services are linked to many sectors of the economy and industry: automotive, food, aerospace and more. To provide them, workshops use this machine tool, which machines parts by means of a cutting tool called a milling cutter.

What are milling machines?

Milling machines are machine tools used to machine parts by chip removal. This is made possible by the machine's rotating multi-edge tool, the milling cutter. The operations carried out on a milling machine can shape parts made of many materials, such as wood, steel, plastics, cast iron and other metals. The parts can have flat or curved surfaces. Once milled, parts can also undergo further processes such as roughing.

CNC technology and universal milling machine services

Before explaining what universal milling services involve, it is worth talking about CNC milling machines, or computer numerical control milling machines. Among the different types of milling machine available, CNC machines have been a real revolution for industry thanks to their advanced technology. These milling machines are run entirely by a computer: the machine's computer sets the cutting parameters that will be applied to the workpiece.

Milling machines of this kind are equipped with a rotating cutter with several cutting edges that machine the workpiece as they approach its surface. What sets these milling machines apart from conventional ones? The cutters move within the machine's coordinate system, removing surplus material as they go.

On these machines, as on all machines using CNC technology, the part has to be designed on separate computers using CAD and CAM software, that is, computer-aided design and manufacturing tools. Once the part has been designed, the results are loaded into the machine's computer and translated into alphanumeric CNC code.

What are milling services?

Universal milling machine services refer to the set of operations that can be carried out on this machine tool, provided it runs on computer numerical control. Milling means machining parts based on a coordinate system. The cutters receive these coordinates, which define the cuts to be made on the workpiece.

The operator enters this data into the CNC machine's computer in alphanumeric code. Programming can be done manually, or one of the machine's built-in programs can be used. Once the computer (CPU) receives the data, it is passed through a controller to the main spindle of the milling machine. The parts of the milling machine (tools) then receive instructions on the movements they need to make (speed, feed and depth) to shape the workpiece.

The fast movement of the cutter and its cutting edges makes machining very quick. And because the computer controls the processes, results are much more accurate, surface finishes are virtually flawless and part quality is high. Machining also takes far less time, which means an increase in productivity and a reduction in production and labour costs.

Milling machines with the latest technology

As we mentioned, providing a universal milling service requires machine tools with the latest technology; in this case, equipment running on computer numerical control. On these machines, once the information has been loaded, the CPU sends the other machine components instructions on what to do.

One of the advantages of these milling machines is that they are fitted with a tool holder that can hold multiple cutting tools. If the milling machine has the right technology, the tool holder can rotate between the different tools needed to machine using different processes (milling, drilling, slotting and so on).

Machines with CNC technology are among the most widely used in industries such as food, automotive, aeronautics and aerospace. This is because CNC milling machines can handle series production, make parts of very different sizes (from something as small as a screw to something as large as aircraft components), and machine complex, high-precision parts from different angles. So, if you want a good universal milling machine service, you should look for a computer-controlled machine tool.

Finally, it is worth pointing out that CNC milling can be done on machines with different numbers of axes. The most advanced can machine on five axes. They move along the X, Y and Z planes but also include A and B rotary movements. These additional axes allow the machine to tilt and rotate the workpiece so that the cutting tool can reach it from different angles.
