CNC lathe repair

Jul 26, 2022

Ferromaster is the service department of Ferrotall that carries out CNC lathe repair and repairs other machines such as machining centres. At Ferromaster we have a team of specialist technicians for machinery equipped with computer numerical control technology, and we also maintain conventional machinery.

What does CNC lathe repair involve?

The CNC lathe is the most advanced type of lathe in the metalworking industry. It works on the same principle as conventional lathes: the cutting tool moves in a controlled way towards the surface of the workpiece for chip removal. As the tool approaches, the workpiece rotates at high speed about its own axis.

The difference between conventional and CNC lathes is that on computer numerically controlled lathes, both the movement of the workpiece and that of the cutting tool are controlled by the machine's computer. That is why repairing CNC lathes is very different from repairing conventional lathes.

CNC lathe repair generally focuses on the electronic components of the machine. These machines incorporate a computer, which determines the various machining parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, tool to be used or workpiece position). For the computer to set these parameters, a prior design of the part must be created using specific software (CAD); the design is translated using another program (CAM) and loaded into the computer. The computer may use a CNC language such as Fagor, Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, etc.

This alphanumeric machine language is based on a system of letters, numbers and symbols. When it comes to repairing CNC lathes, this component is usually the first to be dealt with in order to carry out the restoration work.

CNC lathe maintenance

To avoid the need for CNC lathe repairs, it is important for the machine to receive regular preventive maintenance. At Ferromaster we design CNC machinery maintenance plans that extend the service life of the machines. This also results in greater performance and durability.

In addition, proper maintenance prevents machining defects and production stoppages that only lengthen lead times. Preventive maintenance should be scheduled at regular intervals. It involves not only cleaning the machine thoroughly, removing accumulated swarf and excess oil or grease, but also checking the operation of the machine's electronic component (CNC).

Machining centre repair

As well as repairing CNC lathes, at Ferromaster we are experts in maintaining machining centres. Machining centres are the most complex machine tools in the metalworking industry, as they not only incorporate CNC technology but also multiple axes that allow very complex parts with demanding designs to be machined.

Retrofitting

At Ferrotall we are also experts in retrofitting machining centres and other CNC machinery. Retrofitting makes it possible to upgrade or replace the numerical control fitted to the machine tool. When you purchase a new machine tool, it comes with factory components as standard. Over the years and for various reasons, these may no longer be useful, become obsolete or need some kind of upgrade; such upgrades include, for example, replacing sensors or optimising the motor to increase machining power.

Ferromaster technicians specialise in retrofitting work on the leading CNC brands such as Siemens, Fagor, Fanuc and Heidenhain. We also provide advice on how to improve and optimise your machine's CNC.

How does the repair of CNC lathes and other machines work?

Ferrotall's service team is committed to responding to any reported incident in less than 24 hours and to providing efficient support. We also provide service and support for the brands represented by Ferrotall:

  • Aristech
  • Hurco
  • Pinnacle
  • Quicktech
  • Tongtai
  • Takumi
  • Starrag
  • GROB
  • Vurcon

At Ferromaster we carry out all kinds of work and repairs, but we specialise in adjusting any backlash in the mechanical axes and in parameter setting. We also repair not only CNC machines but also hydraulic, electronic, electrical and mechanical machines. As well as repairing CNC lathes and other machines with these characteristics, we also repair sheet metal bending machines such as shears and press brakes.

We have more than 30 years of experience in maintaining machining centres, lathes and other CNC and conventional machinery. We offer very comprehensive maintenance programmes carried out by specialist technicians. We also customise CNC programs to suit the machining requirements and workload of each workshop.
